今回は英語フレーズ「nothing but 〜」の意味と使い方を勉強しよう。
「何もない、しかし〜」かな?
このフレーズの but は「しかし」ではないよ。
「〜だけ」「〜にすぎない」
nothing but 〜 は「〜だけ」とか「〜にすぎない」という意味。only と同じような意味で使われ、「〜しかしない」とか「〜ばかりしている」という文脈でもよく使われる。
英語の辞書で nothing but を調べてみよう。

〜だけ
- 彼女はただ運が悪かっただけだ。
ちなみにこのフレーズの but は「〜を除いて」という意味。だから上の例文を直訳すると「彼女は何も持っていなかった、不運を除いて」という感じ。
持っていたのは不運だけなのか。
He thinks nothing but business.
彼は仕事のことしか考えない。
She did nothing but cry.
彼女は泣くばかりだった。
It is nothing but a joke.
ほんの冗談にすぎない。
Nothing but a miracle can save her now.
今彼女を救えるのは奇跡だけだ。

この作業は時間の浪費でしかない。
このように nothing but 〜 は「〜だけ」「〜にすぎない」という意味になる。
日本語の訳し方で印象が結構変わるけど、only と同じ意味合いで使われているんですね。
そうだね。ちなみに、よく似たフレーズ「anything but 〜」は「決して〜でない」という意味なので、これも覚えておこう。
