今回は英語フレーズ「compared to 〜」と「compared with 〜」の意味と使い方を勉強しよう。
今回は2つまとめて覚えるんですか？
2つと言ってもどちらも同じように使えるフレーズだよ。
「〜と比べて」
compared to 〜 と compared with 〜 は「〜と比べて」という意味。この2つのフレーズには微妙な違いがあると言われているけど実際はほぼ同じように使われているよ。
Compared to our house, his is a palace.
我々の家と比べると、彼の家は宮殿だ。
We had more patients this week compared with last week.
先週と比べると今週の方が患者が多かった。
The earth is small, compared with [to] the sun.
太陽に比して地球は小さい。
This growth is extraordinary compared to that of China, Brazil and India.
中国、ブラジル、インドとは桁違いの伸びである。
このように compared to 〜 と compare with 〜 は「〜と比べて」という意味になる。
[例文4] の extraordinary は「並外れた」とか「ずば抜けた」という形容詞なので、前半の This growth is extraordinary は「この成長は並外れている」となる。
後半の that は前半の growth 「成長」を指しているので、that of China, Brazil and India は「中国、ブラジル、インドの成長」を意味しているよ。
前半の「この成長」と後半の「中国、ブラジル、インドの成長」を compared to で比較しているんですね。
ところで、compared to と compared with の違いとは？
それでは、この2つフレーズの微妙な違いについて少し見てみよう。
compared to と compared with の違い
『Common Errors in English Usage』という本によると、比較する2つのものの類似点を強調する場合は to を使うのが一般的、類似点および相違点を比較したい場合には with を使うと説明されている。
These are sometimes interchangeable, but when you are stressing similarities between the items compared, the most common word is "to." If you are examining both similarities and differences, use "with."
また、『Oxford Dictionary of English』によると、実際にはこれら2つの違いは明確ではなく、いずれの文脈でも使用可能とあるよ。
Is there any difference between compare with and compare to, and is one more correct than the other? There is a slight difference, in that it is usual to use to rather than with when describing the resemblance, by analogy, of two quite different things, as in critics compared Ellington's music to the music of Beethoven and Brahms. In the sense ‘estimate the similarity or dissimilarity between’, with is often preferred to to, as in schools compared their facilities with those of others in the area. However, in practice the distinction is not clear-cut and both compare with and compare to can be used in either context.
